Proper care following dental implant placement plays an important role in supporting stable integration between the implant fixture and the jawbone, while also contributing to the overall success of the treatment.

Care instructions during the first 2–3 days after dental implant placement

  • Avoid vigorous mouth rinsing and forceful spitting during the first few days following surgery, as these actions may affect the healing process at the implant site.
  • Do not spit out saliva. Instead, swallow saliva normally during the initial recovery period.
  • Avoid using straws when drinking. Water, milk, and other beverages should be consumed directly from a cup.
  • Maintain gentle oral hygiene practices according to the instructions provided by your dentist.
  • During the first one to two days after surgery, mild bleeding, dull pain, slight fluid discharge, or mild swelling of the lips and cheeks may occur. These are normal post-operative responses and generally improve gradually over time.
  • Apply a cold compress to the cheek corresponding to the implant area during the first 24 hours after surgery to help reduce swelling and discomfort. After the first 24 hours, you may switch to warm compresses at approximately 40°C, following your dentist’s instructions, to help reduce swelling and promote blood circulation.
  • Use the prescribed mouthwash according to your dentist’s recommendations to support the healing process.
  • Take all prescribed medications exactly as instructed and follow the recommended dosage schedule.
  • Avoid smoking, consuming alcoholic beverages, and using stimulants while taking medication, which generally lasts for approximately 7–10 days.
  • Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet to support recovery.
    • Avoid consuming raw foods or foods that require excessive chewing.
    • Do not chew hard foods on the side where the implant has been placed.
    • Limit foods with sharp edges or hard bones, as they may injure the newly placed implant site.

Care instructions during the first 2–3 weeks after dental implant placement

  • Avoid blowing your nose forcefully during the recovery period.
  • If you need to sneeze, keep your mouth open to help reduce pressure on the surgical area.
  • Do not smoke during this stage of recovery.
  • Avoid touching, pressing, or applying pressure to the implant site with your tongue.
  • Do not remove, wipe away, or disturb the white layer that forms over the surgical wound, as this is part of the body’s natural healing process.

Additional instructions for patients who undergo sinus augmentation

During the first two to three months after surgery, patients should limit or avoid the following activities:

  • Swimming
  • Air travel, unless it is absolutely necessary and has been approved by the dentist
  • High-intensity exercise or activities that may increase pressure within the maxillary sinus area
  • In some cases, mild nosebleeds may occur during the initial recovery period. This is considered a normal response following sinus augmentation procedures. However, if the bleeding persists, becomes more frequent, or increases in severity, patients should contact their dentist promptly for evaluation and appropriate guidance.
During the healing period after implant placement, you should avoid or minimize activities that could place unnecessary stress on the treatment area or negatively affect the healing process
