After undergoing tooth extraction or wisdom tooth removal, patients should carefully follow all post-treatment care instructions to support proper healing and help minimize the risk of post-operative complications.
Immediately after tooth extraction
- Bite down firmly on the gauze pad for approximately 30 minutes. After removing the gauze, rinse your mouth gently with clean water.
- Avoid vigorous mouth rinsing, forceful spitting, or using straws during the first 24 hours after surgery, as these actions may interfere with blood clot formation and affect the healing process.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek corresponding to the extraction site during the first 24 hours after treatment to help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Apply the cold compress for 15 minutes.
- Rest for 15 minutes.
- Repeat this process several times throughout the day.
- If swelling persists after the first 24 hours, you may switch to warm compresses for approximately 15 minutes at a time and repeat this process three to four times per day.
Taking medications as prescribed
- Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed and follow the dosage instructions provided by your dentist.
- Do not stop taking medications or make any changes to your prescribed medications without approval from your dentist.
Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and stimulants
- Avoid smoking, consuming alcoholic beverages, and using stimulants for at least 10 days after surgery, as these substances may affect the healing process.
Maintaining oral hygiene
- Brush your teeth gently every day to help maintain oral hygiene during the recovery period.
- Avoid allowing your toothbrush or fingers to come into direct contact with the extraction site.
- After the first 24 hours, you may rinse your mouth with diluted saline solution or use mouthwash according to your dentist’s instructions.
Diet and daily activities
- Avoid consuming foods and beverages that are excessively hot during the first 48 hours after surgery.
- Prioritize soft foods that are cool or slightly warm to minimize irritation to the extraction site.
- Avoid strenuous physical activities and high-intensity exercise for at least the first three days after treatment.
Follow-up appointments and monitoring
- Attend all follow-up appointments according to the schedule provided by your dentist.
- Contact the clinic immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms, including:
- Persistent bleeding that does not stop after two days
- Severe pain or significant swelling
- An unusual odor coming from the surgical area
- Prolonged numbness affecting the lips, tongue, or facial area
- Fever or any other abnormal symptoms

Proper care after dental treatment plays an important role in supporting the recovery process and maintaining long-term treatment outcomes. Carefully following all instructions provided by your dentist can help the treatment area heal more efficiently, reduce the risk of complications, and support optimal oral health.
In addition, patients should not overlook routine follow-up appointments, as regular check-ups allow dentists to monitor oral health conditions and promptly address any issues that may arise during the recovery process.
